Project engineer mechanical designer

Your role
What does a project engineer mechanical design do when developing the next generation of compressor technologies?
As a project engineer mechanical design within the Airtec R&D department at Atlas Copco Group, you are involved in the early stages of the innovation process within the Compressor Technique business area. You work in a team of technical specialists dedicated to identifying, evaluating, and developing promising new compressor concepts and technologies.
In this role, you take the lead in the mechanical design process, translating new concept ideas into fully developed prototype designs. As mechanical designer / project engineer, you work from initial concept definition to detailed engineering, including mechanical strength calculations, component selection, tolerancing according to relevant standards, and the development of detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of components and assemblies.
You collaborate closely with engineers, suppliers, and lab technicians to ensure prototypes are manufactured and assembled according to the required specifications. You advise on manufacturing techniques, follow up on component quality through measurements, and support prototype assembly and testing activities.
You are also responsible for ensuring that drawings, models, and technical documentation are correctly managed in the PLM system according to company guidelines. You continuously look for opportunities to improve the design process and explore innovative machine designs, materials, and manufacturing techniques. Your work focuses not only on functionality, but also on quality, manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and sustainability.
You communicate your work clearly to project teams, design reviewers, and technical workgroups, contributing to informed decision-making and continuous innovation. In this role, you gain broad exposure to different compression technologies while developing deep technical expertise.
