An exciting oppportunity has arisen for a Lead Software Engineer to join the Edwards team based at Product Company Eastbourne.

 

As a Lead Software Engineer, your mission is to architect and lead the development and support for software to meet the business needs of Atlas Copco Vacuum Technique Divisions. You will be involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle from requirements capturing to release validation and approval. You will report to the NPI Manager.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Maintain awareness of product roadmaps and priorities in the Vacuum Technique Division as well as software-related research developments taking place in the NTV department. Provide recommendations for new areas of software development that can be pursued within the team or at other locations across the VT Division.
  • Apply your specialist software expertise to guide the development of innovative solutions that address complex challenges and deliver value to Atlas Copco products. Develop robust software architectures that enable others to build reliable, scalable, and maintainable products.
  • Undertake a team-lead or SCRUM Master role to support smooth and effective software development within the team. Advocate for appropriate resource allocation and lead retrospectives following Sprint Reviews when working within an Agile framework.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to colleagues, helping drive work to completion in line with stakeholder expectations. Promote best practices within the team, ensuring adherence to established software development processes.
  • Lead efforts to ensure clarity on software completion criteria. Support best practice when adding new tests and making sure code reviews are carried out at appropriate stages.
  • Maintain and automate the regression test framework.  Provide the necessary test plans to ensure clarity on completion of work, supporting opportunities for automated regression testing, as well as quick-turn shippable software releases.
  • Supervise, coach, develop and mentor team members to support continuous improvement of the software development processes.
  • Oversee the release of production code, ensuring required design and test documentation meets company standards.  Apply an appropriate level of governance to the release of software under permit or as part of an Engineering Change.

To succeed, you will need

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science or a related engineering field
  • Experience working in an electronics manufacturing environment and delivering production‑ready electronic systems
  • Practical embedded software development experience, including familiarity with typical target processors
  • Experience with architecture development activities
  • Experience with project management across Waterfall and Agile frameworks, including experience as SCRUM Master and/or Product Owner, or managing integrated software/electronics projects
  • Significant experience developing software for customer‑facing, electronics‑based products
  • Strong understanding of software development processes and experience working within regulated, compliance‑driven industries
  • Experience working in a global engineering environment and collaborating with international, multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.

Job location

On-Site
This role requires you to work on-site at our office in Eastbourne, United Kingdom (GB). You will be part of a dynamic team and enjoy the benefits of face-to-face collaboration.


There will be some need to travel to UK & European locations, and maybe very occasionally to Asia or US locations, e.g. to other Vacuum Technique sites, key suppliers and, possibly, customers. The role requires close interaction with the Engineering Managers and Marketing / Product Managers, as well as with peers at other Product Companies and divisional managers.
