Linux L2 Engineer (Ubuntu, Intune, Chef)

Your role
As a Linux Engineer specialized in Ubuntu within our corporate IT environment, you will play a pivotal role in engineering, deploying, and maintaining secure and scalable Linux endpoint solutions. Your expertise in automation, predominantly using bash scripting and Chef, will be essential to streamline provisioning processes and ensure consistent compliance with security and operational standards.
Your responsibilities will include developing and sustaining Ubuntu workstation images and baseline configurations, integrating security hardening techniques such as CIS benchmarks, disk encryption (LUKS), and firewall setups (ufw/iptables). You will also manage package repositories, lifecycle updates, and implement audit logging to maintain endpoint integrity.
Collaboration will be at the heart of your role as you partner with developers to support toolchains including GitHub, Docker, and container environments while aligning efforts with security and architecture teams to uphold compliance requirements. Additionally, working closely with global IT digital workplace teams ensures that standards and service management practices are harmonized.
Operational duties include acting as Level 2 escalation for Linux endpoint issues, supporting configuration management through Chef, and mentoring junior team members and community participants. You will be responsible for creating clear documentation and runbooks to promote knowledge sharing and efficient incident response.
Furthermore, you will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by designing automation workflows that integrate with CI/CD pipelines, standardizing developer workstation profiles, and exploring emerging features in endpoint management tools such as Microsoft Intune to enhance the Linux device management strategy within the organization.
To succeed, you will need
- Proven experience managing Ubuntu enterprise systems with a focus on automation using bash scripting and Chef.
- Strong knowledge of Linux endpoint security practices, including patch management, encryption, and system hardening.
- Effective communication skills in English to collaborate seamlessly across diverse teams.
- Ability to design and implement scalable and secure Linux configurations that meet developer and business requirements.
- Optional: Familiarity with Microsoft Intune for Linux endpoint management and compliance.
