Manager-Core Assembly & Test

Your role
As a Core Assembly & Test Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring flawless execution of integrally geared compressor core assembly and testing in Gas & Process India Operations. This includes managing complete core assembly, alignment, precision measurements, and Mechanical Run Test (MRT) and Peformance Test (PT) with a strong focus on safety, quality, and on-time delivery. In addition, he will be responsible for package complete unit tests
This position is key in accelerating the localization program of GAP India by helping core localisation team in developing local vendor capabilities, reducing dependency on imported components, and driving cost competitiveness. You will lead initiatives to optimize assembly processes, improve test reliability, and enhance team competency, while collaborating closely with engineering, quality, and project management teams to meet customer expectations and divisional objectives
Reporting will be dual: operational accountability to the Head Projects – Core Manufacturing for project scope, schedule, and quality, and functional reporting to the Manufacturing Manager for compliances, resource planning, and continuous improvement.
The Roles & responsibilities of the Core Assembly & Test Manager in Gas & Process India will be:
- Drive operational excellence in core assembly and testing of integrally geared compressors in line with global, API, standards and divisional targets.
- Ensure first-time-right assembly and test execution, minimizing rework and maximizing efficiency.
- Collaborate with engineering and supply chain teams to resolve technical challenges and expedite critical components.
- Follow product company guidelines by strictly adhering to work instructions, SOPs, and quality standards for all assembly and testing activities.
- Ensure compliance with documented procedures during rotor build, gearbox assembly, seal installation, and test-bed operations.
- Represent the organization during customer witness testing, ensuring compliance with API and project specifications.
- Introduce digital work instructions and advanced tooling to improve accuracy and reduce cycle time.
- Maintain strict adherence to safety standards and foster a zero-incident culture.
- Ensure transparent reporting and documentation of all assembly and test activities.
- Ensure optimum utilization of resources during testing, including efficient planning and use of rental DG sets for mechanical run tests (MRT) and performance tests (PT)
- Conduct training and skill development programs for assembly engineers and technicians to enhance competency in precision assembly, measurement techniques, and troubleshooting.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing within the assembly and test team.
Process Adherence and Quality Control
- Ensure strict adherence to assembly drawings, torque specifications, and tolerance limits through documented checks.
- Conduct in-process inspections at critical stages (rotor build, bearing installation, seal assembly) to verify clearances and fits.
- Validate seal integrity for labyrinth, carbon ring, and dry gas seals before test runs.
- Implement blue check and contact pattern verification for gear and pinion assemblies.
- Review and approve measurement reports for rotor alignment, shaft run-out and bearing clearances.
- Oversee instrument calibration for test-bed sensors (vibration probes, key phasors, thermocouples).
- Ensure compliance with API 617/672 and ASME PTC 10 standards during mechanical run tests (MRT) and performance tests (PT).
- Monitor and document vibration signatures, bearing temperatures, and lube/seal oil parameters during tests.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for any deviations or failures during assembly or testing.
- Create and maintain a comprehensive Core Build Book, documenting all assembly measurements, tolerances, clearances, and critical inspection records for traceability and future reference
To succeed, you will need
- A Diploma/Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 25/15+ years of experience in Turbo compressors & Expanders assembly and testing, including at least 5 years in integrally geared compressors.
- Proven expertise in core assembly, repair, overhaul, and service of turbomachinery, including troubleshooting and restoring high-speed rotating equipment.
- Familiarity with field service activities, including disassembly, inspection, and reassembly during major overhauls. Hands-on experience in assembly of rotors, bearings, pinions, and precision measurement of clearances, fits, and tolerances.
- Familiarity with mechanical run tests (MRT) and performance tests (PT) conducted as per ASME PTC 10 standards, including interpretation of test curves and troubleshooting anomalies
- Practical knowledge with hands on experience of seal systems, including labyrinth seals, carbon ring seals, and dry gas seals, and their installation and testing.
- Proven expertise/hands on in rotor dynamics, gear trains, balancing (ISO G1.0–G2.5), and high-speed testing.
- Strong understanding of API 617 and API 672 standards.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and vibration issues under time-critical conditions.
