Team Leader - Emerging Technologies - (Machine Technologies)

Your role
As Team Leader - Machine Technologies (Emerging Technologies), your mission is to lead technological development and R&D initiatives across Machine Technologies, covering both Commodities Technologies and Product Technologies. You will drive the development of new concepts, machine technologies, and technology bricks related to compressors, vacuum systems, pumps, and adjacent energy applications, while building technical depth, enabling agile project execution, and nurturing people and competencies for future technological needs. You will do this by developing and sustaining technical competence of the team, by mentoring people and leading from the front on various platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Focus
- Lead timely execution of BDC, technology exploration, new technology projects.
- Work closely with divisional R&D, Internal R&D Team and product teams to understand the problem statement, define work packages, and deliver technological outcomes in line with time, quality, and cost expectations.
- Strengthening GECIA’s contribution toward technological advances by identifying and maturing high-value machine technology opportunities.
People Focus
- Build and develop SMEs across commodities technologies and product technologies, including areas such as valve tech, seal tech, thermal technologies such as heat exchangers, material synthesis, separation/filtration technologies, reciprocating technologies, rotary technologies, and pump technologies.
- Create a strong competence-development environment with coaching, knowledge sharing, technical reviews, and capability roadmaps.
- Instill a “CAN DO; WILL DO” attitude, create research-oriented culture, and help the team operate in a more agile, start-up-like, opportunity-driven manner.
Technology Focus
- Drive innovation in new machine concepts, commodity technologies, component technologies, performance improvement, reliability, life, cost, sustainability, and technology differentiation.
- Track relevant technology and market trends and convert them into PoCs, pilot programs, and focused technology development projects.
- Promote cross-pollination between product technologies, commodity technologies expertise, and represent the team in internal/external technology forums.
- Help in partnering with internal and external partners for driving technology tracks.
Product Focus
- Create and maintain structured knowledge repositories for Technologies, Products.
- Develop reusable design rules, templates, methodologies, and concept libraries for machine technologies.
- Build understanding of compliance and technology-readiness expectations and ensure that concepts are developed with future transferability in mind.
Operational Excellence
- Create and maintain resource planning mechanisms for optimum value creation across multiple parallel technology initiatives.
- Driving PoC and pilot governance, supporting research budgeting and prioritization, and improving time-to-market for promising technologies.
- Ensure disciplined project execution, review cadence, documentation, and quality standards across machine-technology activities.
- Ensure GECIA KPI as targeted by the Management
- Bring Transparency in resource Planning to indicate the Resource Occupancy on different Projects and identify potential bottlenecks.
To succeed, you will need
Experience: 7 to 20 years in Mechanical/ R&D/ Equivalent Engineering/ Technology Domains
Education: B.Tech/ M.Tech/ PhD in Mechanical Engineering or similar domains.
- People Management experience is added advantage
- Experience in working with cross functional teams & cross-cultural teams is must.
- First-hand experience of working on NPI/ NPD/ Technology projects is essential.
Knowledge Requirement:
- Excellent knowledge & experience on at least 1 of the following domains of commodities technologies
- Sealing Technologies (Eg: contactless/ contact sealing/ high pressure/ low pressure sealing)
- Valve technologies (Eg: Compressor valves tech, vacuum valve tech etc)
- Thermal Systems tech (Eg: Heat Exchanger tech, chiller tech etc)
- Material and Material Synthesis
- Filtration/ Separation Technologies
- Excellent knowledge & Experience on at least 1 of Compressor/ Vacuum technologies from the following domains
- Rotory Technologies
- Reciprocating Technologies
- Viscous Pump Technologies
- Good understanding of Atlas Copco Products across Business Areas is an added advantage.
- Excellent knowledge on gasses and gas handling like N2, CO2, CH4, H2, He, gas Mixtures.
- Hands on experience with CAD packages. (Eg: Inventor is preferred)
- Basic knowledge on developing calculations (on excel/ python/ MATLAB) is added advantage.
- Knowledge of assembly/fitment, GD&T & tolerance stack up analysis
- Understanding of Technology Development and Product Development Processes.
- Understanding of Global engineering & Design standards (ISO, DIN, API, ASME etc) is must.
- Working knowledge of AI and use of AI (not limited to Gen AI) in engineering systems is an added advantage.
