Your Role
The Engineering Manager will report to the Product Company General Manager and will functionally report to the Vice President Engineering from the Industrial Vacuum Division. The job holder will interact with the other engineering managers in the product companies worldwide and the central technology groups. The Engineering Manager is responsible for ensuring the highest level of quality in the engineering function, developing and executing high level roadmaps and activity schedules, defining budgets and ensuring a strong level of competency to ensure a highly competitive product portfolio which meets time, cost & quality targets. As part of the Product Company management team the Engineering Manager will also be involved in supporting site wide Product Company strategy under the guidance of the GM. Headcount ~25 to 30 heads across the NPI, and TSG.
Purpose:
- Ensure sustainable profitable growth targets for General Vacuum division through management of Product Company engineering teams including New Product Introduction and Technical Support.
- Provide functional management to engineering teams to ensure the highest standards in technical quality, functionality and cost delivered in a timely manner.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive plans to ensure product roadmaps, project schedules and support activities are aligned to Division requirements.
- Drive effective cross functional teamwork to deliver highly competitive and reliable products to agreed time, quality and cost targets
- Build a strong, competent, effective and motivated team scaled to the agreed project deliverables.
Mission:
- Champion engineering integration and collaboration activities across General Vacuum division and where appropriate across Divisions within the Vacuum Technique Business Area, locally, regionally and globally.
- Create new innovative, market leading products and systems with high customer value to support profitable growth while efficiently maintaining and supporting existing products for product company Qingdao.
- Support the company’s overall targets and proactively support other departments in any engineering related activities, including a good teamwork among teams for different division.
Responsibilities:
NPI Programmes (limited to General Vacuum divisions): Responsible for the high-level definition, planning, execution and timely delivery of best in class new and derivative products.

- In full compliance with legislative, company & industrial standards.
- With operational, service & support requirements fully met
- In compliance with Industrial Vacuum Division end to end process Concept to product
- Aligned to agreed roadmaps and customer order schedules endorsed by the General Vacuum division
- Drive local monthly PCM’s for General Vacuum divisions
- Technical Support: Responsible for ensuring a responsive support function delivering the highest levels of quality and support to design, customer and factory improvements. Organisation: Strengthen the engineering organisation through effective staff recruitment, retention, objective setting, competency and organisation development.
- After market support: best in class after-market support, warranty reporting on monthly PQM
- Non-standard product development (ETO): develop (repeat) non-standard derivatives based on standard products produced in Qingdao
- Teamwork: Develop positive relationships to promote collaboration between technical, marketing, sales, procurement, service and operations functions to rapidly identify, assesses and develop viable class leading products which deliver profitable growth. As the technical authority of the PC, you support and guide the other departments in their technical needs. You actively support the other teams whenever this cooperation is the more effective or sustainable way to reach the company objectives
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure product portfolio continuously meets legislative, industrial and corporate standards through design, safety review and certification processes. Act as delegated signatory for key technical authority documentation.
- Ensure that all areas under direct control, including particularly the lab, are conducted and work in a safe and effective manner in compliance with the Company's Health and Safety policy as well as all applicable Chinese laws and regulations related to labour, safety and environment.
- As a team leader, live according to and consistently promote the behaviours associated with the Cultural Behaviour of Atlas Copco, within the own team and towards colleagues and superiors.
- Coach and develop the team to maximize its full performance. Oversee the knowledge and skill matrix of your team and actively steer training programs to close gaps and increase effectiveness, including but not limited to technical skills, product knowledge, communication, finance and cost calculation, relevant digital tools and constructive behaviour. Continuously increase the maturity of your team and secure flexibility and agility.
- Develop and support a spirit of open communication, fairness, non-discrimination and respect for the individuals within your own team and towards your colleagues and superiors.
- Maximize transparency in all activities. Implement and safeguard the business code of practice in all areas under direct control and actively review and audit for compliance.
To succeed, you will need
- Education level: Degree in an engineering or science discipline
- Relevant Previous experience (minimum years of experience to competently carry out the role, not total year of experience)
- 10 years engineering experience at a leadership level including of new product development programmes, operations and support activities.
- Comprehensive technical knowledge of vacuum pumps, systemised products and their applications in the market place.
- Knowledge areas/Skills (minimum level of knowledge to fullfil the role’s responsibilities)
- Experience and understanding of supply chain and manufacturing systems.
- A proven ability to manage projects and activities, delivering on time, to specification with strict quality and cost targets (project and product costs).
- Other requirements (e.g. Language skills; competencies; expected travel requirements)
- Sufficient business/commercial awareness to make appropriate proposals to balance potentially conflicting commercial and technical drivers.
- Management expertise to build & develop a cohesive team, to provide leadership & direction, and to foster good communications across project teams & functions.
- Influencing, communication, presentation and negotiating skills at the highest levels, both internally and externally. Able to achieve credibility and command respect. Influencing across functional boundaries is a key element of this role.
- Experience with cooperating in a decentralised organisation working with different processes and development ways.
