Your future job

Master Thesis: Mechanical Driveline Design for Low-Reaction Assembly Tools

Do you want to contribute to the next generation of industrial assembly tools used by customers worldwide? Are you passionate about engineering innovation and solving complex technical challenges that combine productivity, ergonomics, and mechanical performance? We are looking for a motivated master's student to help further develop a novel low-reaction angle tool concept and bring it closer to a production-ready solution.

Atlas Copco Industrial Technique develops and delivers the latest industrial tools and assembly systems for smarter production to industry customers globally.

Practical information

Location: Our HQ in Sickla, Stockholm
Start: Q1 2027
Duration: 6 months, or according to agreement
Number of students: The thesis project is intended for one student and will be carried out in close collaboration with Atlas Copco specialists.

Background

Atlas Copco is developing a new generation of low-reaction angle nutrunners aimed at improving operator ergonomics while maintaining high productivity and reliability. The development requires a combination of mechanical design, simulation, testing, and validation to ensure long-term performance in demanding industrial applications.

A proof-of-concept has been developed and successfully tested, demonstrating the potential of the technology. However, the current prototype relies on components that were not originally designed for this application. To further optimize the concept and validate its long-term performance, a complete driveline design tailored to this specific application is required.

This thesis offers a unique opportunity to work on a real product development challenge and contribute directly to future Atlas Copco assembly solutions.

Throughout the project, you will work closely with experienced design engineers and specialists within mechanics, testing and product development.

Scope

The objective of this thesis is to develop and optimize the mechanical driveline architecture for a low-reaction angle tool.

The work is expected to include:

  • Literature study, benchmarking and driveline analysis
  • Simulation and evaluation of gear ratio alternatives and system performance
  • Design of gears, shafts, bearings, housings, and related driveline components
  • Engineering calculations, design verification and concept optimization
  • Collaboration with Atlas Copco specialists and external experts
  • Design review and presentation of findings and recommendations

A key part of the work will be identifying the most suitable gear ratio for the driveline. The selection should balance productivity, ergonomics, mechanical durability, efficiency, and other relevant requirements. This will require simulations, testing, data analysis, and stakeholder input.

To succeed, you will need

You are pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design, Product Development, or a related engineering discipline.

It is beneficial if you have knowledge of and/or a strong interest in:

  • Mechanical design and product development
  • Power transmission systems and gears
  • CAD design and engineering drawings
  • Machine elements such as bearings, shafts, and gearboxes
  • Engineering calculations and simulations
  • Manufacturing methods and mechanical assemblies

You are analytical, curious, and enjoy solving complex engineering challenges. You are self-driven and proactive. You communicate effectively and enjoy collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines.

This thesis is an excellent opportunity for students aspiring to become Mechanical Design Engineers within a global R&D organization.

In return, we offer you

As a thesis student at Atlas Copco, you will be part of an experienced R&D environment where your work can influence future product development. You will gain hands-on experience in mechanical design, simulations, testing, concept evaluation and product validation while collaborating closely with specialists across different engineering disciplines and working close to real customer needs.

At Atlas Copco, you’ll thrive in a friendly environment, develop your skills, and see ideas take shape. You will also have the opportunity to connect with colleagues across the Atlas Copco Group and gain insight into product development in a global industrial company.
