Your role
What does a process & automation engineer do at the Atlas Copco Group in Wilrijk? As a process & automation engineer, you will join our Focus Assembly & End Paint team to develop, implement, and optimize cutting-edge production processes, automation solutions, and digital manufacturing applications. Working closely with operators, product development, and supporting departments, you combine manufacturing engineering with advanced robotics to continuously improve safety, quality, productivity, and flexibility. Your daily flow as a process & automation engineer involves leading automation projects from concept to final care using our structural Atlas Copco methodologies (CTP 2.0).
You define and install new production assets, manage project timelines, budgets, and investment files, and provide expert advice on manufacturability and industrialization. A core part of your responsibility includes supporting and optimizing PLC-controlled production systems, coordinating PLC and HMI programming adjustments, and seamlessly integrating robotic applications (such as KUKA or FANUC). Additionally, you drive machine connectivity and SCADA solutions, build insightful dashboards to track machine performance, and evaluate emerging technologies like AMRs, AGVs, and humanoid robotics.
You will report to the team leader within the engineering department and work via a hybrid model at our facility in Wilrijk.

Master degree in Industrial or Civil Engineering (Electromechanics, Automation) or equivalent experience

Good knowledge of production processes and industrial automation, paired with an analytical, critical, and problem-solving mindset

Experience with PLC systems and HMIs, with knowledge of PLC programming (Siemens, Beckhoff) considered an important asset

Hands-on familiarity or experience with industrial robotics (such as KUKA, FANUC) and SCADA systems or industrial protocols (OPC-UA, Profinet)

Strong project management skills to independently manage scope, timing, quality, and budgets

Affinity with machine connectivity, Industry 4.0 applications, and data analysis tools like SQL or Power BI

Professional communication skills in both Dutch and English, both written and spoken

Prior experience within manufacturing, process engineering, assembly lines, or automation setups is a plus
